Konstancin-Jeziorna
In 1990 the former mayors of Konstancin-Jeziorna and Leidschendam agreed to allow both municipalities to work together in different areas. In 1991 a collaboration agreement was actually signed in relation to health care, public housing, organisation and administration, tourism, agriculture, horticulture and the environment. Education, culture and direct aid were added to this in 1993.
Since 1994 projects and other educational activities within these fields have been co-ordinated within a municipal committee. Recently they have been accommodated within a working group. As part of the town twinning between Konstancin-Jeziorna and Leidschendam many friendly contacts have been made in the last twelve years.
Different kinds of exchanges have taken place in recent years. Municipal administrators, executives, teachers, students, boy scouts and various others have visited the “twin town” in recent years. Artists have also exhibited their work in both towns. In recent years the need for material, direct aid has shifted towards an increased demand for knowledge and information transfer.
Direct help and extra support from our municipality continues to be needed for certain groups within the Konstancin-Jeziorna municipality – such as senior citizens, orphans and the handicapped. The Leidschendam-Voorburg - Konstancin-Jeziorna working group is working with the working group in Poland on drawing up a long-range plan. That plan will include exchanges between the police, fire service and sports clubs in addition to the activities already mentioned and church contacts will be started up. We will also check on how more attention can be given to the collaboration in the local press in both towns.
Some facts about Konstancin-Jeziorna
Konstancin-Jeziorna lies twenty kilometres to the south of the Polish capital city Warsaw. The municipality has around 23,000 inhabitants spread over a number of residential precincts. The town is relatively young; an inscription from 1937 in a block of granite in a park commemorates the 40-year existence of the municipality. 1897 is therefore recognised as the founding year for Konstancin-Jeziorna. In that year an English nature reserve arose on the banks of the Jeziorna river; this contained a casino and was flanked by several guest houses. The settlement was named Konstancya, and over a period of twenty years it developed into a spa along the lines of other - at that time fashionable - summer residencies in Europe as a result of the carbonated water source that was opened up. The groundwater from the source comes from a depth of 1,700 metres and contains salt, iodine, iron and bromide among other things. In 1997 the municipality celebrated its 100-year existence. Leidschendam donated two children's playgrounds to Konstancin-Jeziorna on the occasion of this anniversary.
