Waste Collection
Domestic waste presentation rules
In Leidschendam the domestic waste is collected separately using domestic waste bins. Residents of a low-rise building use mini-bins; only residents of flats or apartments may get rid of domestic waste in the district bin on the street. Placing waste beside the bin is prohibited. Avalex empties the bins at set times.
In Voorburg the domestic waste from low-rise buildings is collected using mini-bins and for residents of a flat or apartment this is done with bags, an in-house bin or a district bin.
You are given an annual waste calendar for the collection days in your district. If you have not received a calendar call Avalex on (070) 33 73 000. Visit the Avalex website.
GFT
GFT (groente-, fruit- en tuinafval) is vegetable, fruit and garden waste. This is also called organic waste, because its origins are plants or animals.
This forms a large part of all our domestic waste. By separating the gft-waste from the other waste, less waste has to be deposited or burned. As you probably know separated residual waste and vegetable, fruit and garden waste are collected in Leidschendam-Voorburg. Sometimes a load of waste will be rejected when deposited, which is not only bad for the environment, but also leads to higher costs for its processing. In practice it appears that not everyone is aware of what belongs in the gft bin. This is why this page contains supplementary information.
What is gft-waste?
We understand gft -waste to be: leaves, peel and remains of vegetables, fruit and potatoes, food leftovers, egg shells, nut shells, coffee filters and coffee grounds, tealeaves and teabags, cut flowers, indoor plants (without balls of earth), grass cuttings, small tree cuttings and other plant material. Wrap small bones, fish bones, gravy, fat and meat left in newspaper first. Note: do not pack your gft-waste in plastic bags, milk containers or other cardboard drinks containers. This could make a batch of GFT-waste unusable!
Some tips for satisfying use of the gft-bin
-
With the spring and summer months in prospect.
-
lean your min-bin regularly with water and possibly soft soap.
-
Lay a page from an old newspaper in the bottom of the bin.
-
Do not place the bin in full sunlight.
-
Pack meat and fish leftovers in a single newspaper first.
-
Do not allow waste to dry/leak
-
Do not cram GFT down
Large domestic waste
If you have waste that does not fit in the bin this is considered to be large domestic waste. Have this collected: always call Kringloopbedrijf Holland first (tel: 070-3833234) followed by Avalex. The recycling company can use more than you think. Large waste is also collected free by regional cleaning company Avalex. You should make a telephone appointment for this (tel. 3373003). Large waste may only be put outside early on the morning of the collection day; the collection department starts to collect large waste at 7.30 a.m.

Small chemical waste (KCA)
Chemical waste on the KCA-list is collected using the chemocar. In Leidschendam during the evening collection. The pick-up locations, correct day and time can be found in the municipal notices. In Voorburg there is a monthly collection at fixed places. Time and location can be found on the waste calendar from Avalex. Chemical waste can also be presented at the civic tip. Product listed as small chemical waste can be recognised by the KCA-logo.
Note: The KCA-logo concerns the contents, not on the packaging. Empty paint tins, empty bottles for benzine or empty aerosols are not collected separately. Do not rinse the tins and bottles, because the bit that remains cannot do any harm on incineration.
